A & M trusts

Accumulation and maintenance trusts are often used to make provision for younger children by parents or grandparents.

In the early years an A & M trust operates in a similar manner to a discretionary trust, with income being disbursed to the beneficiaries at the discretion of the trustees. Then, at a specified time, the income is given to the beneficiaries as of right, as in the life interest trust.

The capital is usually paid to the beneficiaries when it is considered they have reached an age when they are able to control their finances.
