Acquisitions can be opportunistic, if for instance you become aware of a company in your sector which has become available for sale, or they can be part of a planned process to expand your business beyond that which can be achieved through organic growth. In either circumstance, the acquisition process is likely to involve negotiations with the shareholders and/or advisers of the target company, and will also involve due diligence conducted by you and your advisers on the target company (to ensure you are buying what you think you are buying).
